The author discusses this mostly in institutional terms as far as sorting and grouping goes, but from whence does the notion arise in individuals? Particularly of interest is thinking about how offensive almost everyone finds the receiving end of the act, and yet how willingly some folks engage in perpetuating it nonetheless. What was your experience like with the population at Sargent? Did most people exude a sense of blithe unconcern for judging others, or did you find a petty spirit present?
